Denali Arts Council invites you to our 25th annual Take Back the Town celebration—our yearly gathering of members and friends as we mark the close of summer and welcome the changing seasons. This autumn-themed masquerade ball is a time to pause, refresh, and step into the vibrant winter season of performances, art, classes, and concerts at the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar. The evening begins with our annual member’s meeting and dinner, open to Denali Arts Council members only. It’s a perfect time to renew your annual membership, enjoy a delicious brisket dinner with a beverage, hear updates on how DAC has been doing, learn about exciting plans for the future, and take part in board elections. Afterward, we welcome the public to join the festivities for an evening of music and dancing. Come enjoy the community party, don your mask, and dance the night away to the Denali Cooks! It’s also a great opportunity to learn more about DAC and the many ways we serve the community. Donations are welcome to support DAC and the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar. Join us for an evening of community, creativity, and seasonal splendor as we celebrate 25 years of Take Back the Town.
In 1979 at the age of 19, Suraj Holzwarth became the youngest woman to summit Denali, North America’s highest peak. In this riveting memoir, Suraj shares a spirited account of the 30-day expedition, which began in Peters Hills, leading through some of Alaska’s most remote wilderness before reaching Denali’s Base Camp. Eighty pounds of gear on her back, she and her team bushwhacked through mosquito-infested alders, forded raging glacial rivers, navigated quicksand, rocky moraines, and crevassed glaciers. Suraj will present a slide show of her experience, read an excerpt of her book, followed by a short Q and A.
