View From the Tarmac - Talkeetna Airport now and then
12/22/2004 | by Geri Denkewalter
On a sunny July day, the Talkeetna State Airport is a virtual beehive of activity. There are planes taking off, visitors taking pictures, telephones ringing, pilots briefing passengers, radios crackling. Office staff are filling schedule books, coffee pots, and toilet paper dispensers in the bathrooms. This is quite a change from the sleepy airport of just 15 years ago, where the activity centered around flying mountain climbers into the Kahiltna Glacier Base Camp, taking the mail once a week to Gold Creek, and providing support to the Bush community in the surrounding areas. There were occasional scenic flights with tourists but that was still a novelty.
